What is a Direct Cremation?
A direct cremation, sometimes called an unattended cremation, is a cremation where there is no funeral service at the crematorium and no mourners attend the cremation.
Your loved one is cared for by BJR Funerals and taken to the crematorium once the necessary arrangements and legal documentation have been completed. The cremation then takes place without a ceremony.

The ashes can subsequently be returned to the family, depending on the arrangements made with you.

Although there is no service at the crematorium, a direct cremation is still a funeral arrangement. Your loved one is cared for throughout the process, the necessary legal requirements are followed, and the cremation is carried out with dignity and respect.
The word "direct" describes how the cremation takes place, rather than the level of care given to the person who has died.

What happens during a Direct Cremation?
Step 1
Contact BJR Funerals
The first step is simply to speak to us.
Whether you already know that you want a direct cremation or you are just looking for some advice, we can talk you through the options.
You do not need to have everything decided before contacting BJR Funerals.
We will explain what happens, answer your questions and make sure you understand the arrangements before anything is confirmed.
Step 2
Your loved one is brought into our care
Once the necessary arrangements have been made, your loved one will be brought into the care of BJR Funerals.
They will be looked after respectfully and kept in appropriate facilities until the cremation takes place.
We understand how important it is to know that your loved one is being cared for properly. If you have particular wishes or concerns about their care, please tell us.
Step 3
The necessary paperwork is completed
A cremation cannot simply take place without the appropriate documentation.
There are legal requirements that must be followed before a cremation can go ahead.
BJR Funerals will guide you through the paperwork and explain anything that requires your attention.
Where possible, we will take care of the administrative side of the arrangements for you, allowing you to concentrate on your family.
Step 4
The cremation is arranged
Once the necessary arrangements have been completed, the cremation is booked with the crematorium.
Unlike an attended funeral, there is no service for mourners to attend.
The coffin is taken to the crematorium and the cremation takes place privately.
Step 5
The cremation takes place
The cremation is carried out at the crematorium without mourners being present.
A direct cremation does not mean that your loved one is treated differently or with less dignity.
It simply means that there is no ceremony taking place at the crematorium.
Step 6
The ashes are returned
Following the cremation, the ashes are dealt with according to the arrangements agreed with the family.
Where appropriate, the ashes can be returned to you or collected from BJR Funerals within 24 hours of cremation.
We can also talk to you about the different options available for keeping, scattering, burying or otherwise remembering your loved one's ashes.
Step 7
You decide how you want to remember them
This is where direct cremation can offer families considerable freedom.
There is no requirement for the memorial or celebration of life to happen at the same time as the cremation.
You may decide to hold a gathering immediately, several weeks later, or much further down the line.
There may be no formal memorial service at all.
The important thing is that the decision belongs to you.
